India's blue water naval force plans to have a fleet of 200 warships and 600 combat aircraft under its command by 2027.
Indigenous stealth-guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao was incorporated into New Delhi's naval fleet on Sunday by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
The second among the Visakhapatnam class of destroyers, the warship was designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and constructed by the state-run Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited based in Mumbai.
Last year, India formally inducted the stealth-guided Visakhapatnam destroyer into the navy following the commissioning of INS Kolkata, INS Kochi, and INS Chennai during the first series of development of such vessels in the country.
INS Mormugao is christened after Mormugao, a port city located in India's western state of Goa.
The fifth Indian-built missile destroyer in its class, the vessel has a displacement of over 7,400 tons, is 163-metres long and has a width of 17 meters. It can travel at a speed of over 30 knots.
Featuring state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, the ship is equipped with surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and surface-to-surface missiles (SSMs).
It is propelled by four powerful gas turbines and is made to take on the adversary in all conditions - nuclear, biological, and chemical.
Additionally, INS Mormugao boasts a modern surveillance radar that provides it with data to help it hit its targets with accuracy.
Increasing India's anti-submarine capabilities, the ship also has rocket launchers, torpedo launchers, and ASW helicopters in its weapons package - all of which have been developed indigenously.
"Today is yet another milestone in the history of indigenous warship building as we commission the destroyer Mormugao, particularly when our sister ship Visakhapatnam was inducted into the Indian Navy just over a year ago," Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said at the ship's commissioning.
"This achievement is indicative of the large strides we have taken in warship design and building capability over the last decade. The Navy has a tradition of naming ships after cities which creates an enduring umbilical link between the two," Admiral Kumar added.
INS Mormugao underwent its first sea trial last year in December.
According to a Defense Ministry release, the stealth-guided missile destroyer will significantly increase the Indian Navy's overall combat capabilities.
