Indian Army Appoints First Woman Officer to Lead Supply Chain of Northern Command
India's armed forces have undertaken several measures to induct women officers at the highest levels in the tri-services.
Colonel Shuchita Shekhar on Monday became the first woman officer hailing to take charge of a "Mechanical Transport Battalion", that oversees the supply chain of the Northern Command of the 1.3 million-strong Indian Army.
"Dhruva Command congratulates Col Shuchita Shekhar, first Women Officer of Army Service Corps to assume command of a Communication Zone Mechanical Transport Battalion responsible for the
maintenance of the Supply Chain of the fully operational Northern Command," the Army said in a congratulatory post on Twitter.
This is not the first time, a woman officer has been chosen to lead a military formation in India this year.
In May, Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh became the first female to take a sortie in the country's latest Rafale fighter jet.
During the same month, Captain Abhilasha Barak made history, becoming the first woman aviator to be commissioned into the
Army Aviation Corps.
On the other hand, in January, Captain Shiva Chauhan accomplished another first in the Indian Army's lexicon by being the first woman officer to be posted at the Siachen Glacier, regarded as the world's highest battlefield.
