The brain behind OpenAI arrived in India on Wednesday and met a wide range of people from entrepreneurs to college students. Most of his talks revolved around the future of AI and how technology can benefit Indians.
ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday in New Delhi, noting India's enthusiasm and thoughtfulness toward Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Sharing a picture from his meeting with Modi, Altman wrote on Twitter: "Great conversation with Narendra Modi discussing India's incredible
tech ecosystem and how the country can benefit from AI, really enjoyed all my meetings with people in the Prime Minister's office."
Retweeting Altman's tweet,
Modi thanked Altman for the insightful talks.
"The potential of AI in enhancing India's tech ecosystem is indeed vast and that too among the youth in particular. We welcome all collaborations that can accelerate our digital transformation for empowering our citizens," Modi tweeted.
On Thursday, while interacting with college students in Delhi, Altman spoke about opportunities offered by AI and what India should do.
He also talked about global regulations "which prevent some of the downsides from happening."
Speaking about how his company is adopting self-regulation, Altman said: "We spent almost eight months on GPT for making sure that it was safe enough to release. We built the technology, have worked with organizations to figure out the limits, and tested them all. We do think that coordination is important. So self-regulation is important. It is something that we want to offer. The world should not be left entirely in the hands of the companies."
Although the
adoption of AI in Indian companies, institutes, and start-ups is at a very initial level, the growth rate for the sector is estimated at about 20-25 percent.
It is predicted that AI will generate 416,000 jobs and an additional $957 billion to India's economy by 2035.
The ChatGPT founder is due to leave India today and visit South Korea.
