As cyclone Biarparjoy gears up for landfall on Thursday evening, the coastal area of Pakistan and India’s Gujarat are now witnessing heavy rainfall and high tides.
India's Gujarat government on Wednesday said it has evacuated nearly 37,800 people living near eight coastal districts of the state and moved them to temporary shelters.
And according to the State Chief's Office of Pakistan's Sindh province, out of the 71,380 residents who are deemed vulnerable in three districts, a total of 56,985 had been evacuated by Tuesday.
Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall between
Mandvi (Gujarat) and
Karachi (Pakistan) near
Jakhau Port (Gujarat).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been providing updates on the cyclone's movement and said on Wednesday morning.
“The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Biparjoy over the north-east Arabian Sea moved nearly northwards with a speed of 3km/h,” it said. On Thursday, the cyclone will make landfall and the “wind speed will be 125 to 135 km/h gusting to 150 km/h”.
IMD has also issued a warning of very heavy rainfall along with strong winds in many districts of Gujarat, especially in the Kutch, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka areas.
