The meet, organized at the behest of Bihar State Chief Nitish Kumar, was meant to iron out differences between opposition parties. Instead, it brought out the differences between some of the constituents out in the open. Several opposition parties have raised their voice against keeping the Congress out of polls in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, etc.Akhilesh Yadav, who heads the Samajwadi Party, a key partner in the opposition, doesn't want to partner with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh."We hope all those parties which wish to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party will support Samajwadi Party with a big heart."The Congress, however, has criticized these statements, claiming these were not aimed at uniting the opposition and were attempts at creating rifts within the opposition's ranks."AAP says leave Delhi and Punjab, Akhilesh Yadav says leave UP, Mamata Banerjee says leave West Bengal, KCR wants Congress to leave Telangana... Is this opposition unity, or a new form of a Congress-free country?" Congress politician Acharya Pramod Krishnam said.In next year's general elections, Modi would seek an unprecedented third straight term in office and the opposition is trying to stop him from scripting history. If Modi wins the 2024 polls, he will become the first Prime Minister to win three consecutive elections in India.

BJP Mocks Opposition 'Unity' in Wake of AAP-Congress Clash
14:10 24.06.2023 (Updated: 14:11 24.06.2023) Spearheaded by Bihar State Chief Nitish Kumar, India's fractured opposition is trying to form a grand alliance to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2024 national polls.
India's federally ruling
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday took a swipe at a group of
opposition parties a day after a meeting held to showcase unity among constituents showed sharp differences.
Mocking the opposition's efforts to form a united front against
PM Modi, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala sarcastically labeled it as an "amazing introduction of opposition unity" on Twitter.
His tweet came after the
Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that governs Delhi and the country's principal opposition party
Congress clashed during the 15-party meeting held in Patna on Friday.
The meet, organized at the behest of
Bihar State Chief Nitish Kumar, was meant to iron out differences between opposition parties. Instead, it brought out the differences between some of the constituents out in the open.
Several opposition parties have raised their voice against keeping the Congress out of polls in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, etc.
Akhilesh Yadav, who heads the
Samajwadi Party, a key partner in the opposition, doesn't want to partner with the
Congress in Uttar Pradesh.
"We hope all those parties which wish to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party will support Samajwadi Party with a big heart."
The Congress, however, has criticized these statements, claiming these were not aimed at uniting the opposition and were attempts at creating rifts within the opposition's ranks.
"AAP says leave Delhi and Punjab, Akhilesh Yadav says leave UP, Mamata Banerjee says leave West Bengal, KCR wants Congress to leave Telangana... Is this opposition unity, or a new form of a Congress-free country?" Congress politician Acharya Pramod Krishnam said.
In next year's general elections, Modi would seek an unprecedented third straight term in office and the opposition is trying to stop him from scripting history.
If Modi wins the 2024 polls, he will become the first Prime Minister to win three consecutive elections in India.
