The criminal, Gufran, had 13 cases lodged against him for banditry and several murders, all of which were registered in Uttar Pradesh.
Muhammand Gufran, who was wanted in multiple criminal cases, was shot dead in an encounter with the Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday at around 5 am near a sugar mill in Kaushambi district.

"Gufran was confronted by the team and opened fire, following which the police retaliated, and in the cross-firing, Gufran was shot and injured," Uttar Pradesh Police said in a statement.

He was taken to a local hospital but was later declared dead.
Police recovered a nine mm cartridge, a .32 bore pistol and an 'Apache' bike from the encounter site.
Senior police officer Brijesh Srivastava said, "He (Gufran) was carrying a reward of INR 125,000 ($1,525)."
The encounter comes a day after the state government launched "Operation Conviction" to identify 20 cases in every district related to rape, murder, banditry, conversion and cow slaughter for speedy trial and conviction within 30 days of when charges are filed.
As per an Indian media report, since March 2017, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed 186 encounters, with more than one alleged criminal being killed by police every 15 days.
