Ajit Pawar has become the deputy state chief of Maharashtra for the fifth time, a record since the position was created in 1978.
In a major jolt to opposition unity just 10 months ahead of the 2024 parliamentary polls, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) politician Ajit Pawar, along with eight lawmakers of the party, joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Maharashtra on Sunday.
The politician took oath as the deputy state chief, while the other lawmakers were sworn in as ministers. Pawar, who is also the nephew of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, will be sharing the post with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician Devendra Fadnavis.
The move comes days after he expressed the desire to step down as leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, seeking an organisational responsibility in the party. According to media reports quoting sources in the NCP, Pawar was not happy after being denied the post of the party's state unit chief.
Apart from Pawar, the other lawmakers who joined the ruling dispensation in the state include Chaggan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Dharmobaba Atram, Aditi Tatkare, Sanjay Bansode, and Anil Patil.
While talking to reporters after taking oath, Pawar said: "The country is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is also popular in other countries. Everyone supports him and appreciates his leadership. We will fight the upcoming Parliamentary elections and Assembly elections with them (BJP) and that is why we have taken this decision."
He further said that he, along with other lawmakers, has joined the state government as NCP and will continue to fight all future elections under the party's name and symbol.

“For last 24 years, many leaders of the NCP worked to grow it. We all worked under guidance of Sharad Pawar. We will now promote young blood. I don't care about criticism and will work towards the welfare of people of Maharashtra. We have joined the government as NCP. All future elections will be fought under the symbol and name of the NCP. If we can go with Shiv Sena in Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), we can join BJP too. We have done it in Nagaland as well”, the newly sworn-in deputy state chief said.

He also claimed that in the future, more NCP politicians will be inducted in the state government.

Discussion on Prime Ministerial Candidate Not Planned at Mega Opposition Meet - Report
When asked about opposition unity against the BJP ahead of the 2024 parliamentary polls, he said: "Many opposition parties are trying to come together at a national level. But there are many contradictions and these meetings give no output. The country needs a strong leadership. Hence, we decided to join the government".
After Pawar took oath, Maharashtra state chief Eknath Shinde welcomed the NCP politician and other lawmakers, and said "now the double-engine government got a third engine and it will run at a bullet train's speed”.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra State Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar confirmed that Pawar had submitted his resignation as leader of opposition in the state legislature.

Reacting to the development, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said: "I had called a meeting of some top leaders [of the party] on 6 July and was to discuss some questions pertaining to changes in the organisation. Before that, some colleagues took a completely different stance and are today claiming to be the party. Things will be clear before the public in next two-three days".
He also said that a decision will be made regarding those who violated party line. "We will have to take a decision on all those who have violated the party line and have taken the oath. I have not spoken with any of these nine who took the oath. Only Chhagan Bhujbal told me what was happening was not proper", the NCP chief noted.
