To mark World Lion Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Thursday, saying that the country is proud to be home to the Asiatic Lion, and has witnessed a steady rise in its population over the last few years.PM Modi praised all individuals who are working toward lion conservation and the preservation of their habitat. He posted pictures of the lions and expressed his strong determination to cherish and safeguard these magnificent creatures, ensuring that they flourish for future generations.To mark the occasion, the Lucknow Zoo in India's Uttar Pradesh will be receiving an Asiatic Lion from Shri Venkateshwar Zoological Park in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, under the wildlife exchange programme on Thursday.The decision was made after the recent death of Prithvi - a lion that had resided at the Lucknow Zoo since 2015.According to the latest report, the population of lions rose from 523 in 2015 to 674 in 2020 in India.Based on estimated figures, there are around 30,000 to 50,000 lions left across the world, placing them in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) vulnerable species category.

To mark World Lion Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Thursday, saying that the country is proud to be home to the Asiatic Lion, and has witnessed a steady rise in its population over the last few years.

"World Lion Day is an occasion to celebrate the majestic lions that captivate our hearts with their strength and magnificence. India is proud to be home to the Asiatic Lions and over the last few years there has been a steady rise in the lion population in India. I laud all those working towards protecting the habitat of lions," Modi wrote on X, previously known as Twitter.
