Demography, Democracy & Diversity Can Fulfill India's Dreams: Modi on Independence Day
India, the world's largest democratic nation, is celebrating its 77th Independence Day today. India gained independence from the colonial British Raj on 15th August 1947.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address to the nation on Tuesday stated that the three Ds of "demography, democracy, and diversity" could lead the nation to accomplish all its dreams soon.
"This Triveni (troika) can fulfill all dreams of India," he said in his address to the people from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort in the heart of Delhi.
The Indian leader highlighted his government's effort in alleviating poverty in the country of 1.4 billion people, underlining that 135 million joined the middle class after being brought out of poverty by his government in the past five years.
"Our track record attests to the fact that India
fulfills what it resolves," Modi added.
Subsequently, he noted that India was on its way to becoming a developed nation in the next quarter of the century.
"When the country celebrates its 100th Independence Day in 2047, it would be as a developed nation," he stressed.
Modi also guaranteed the citizens of India that in the next five years, India will surpass Japan and Germany to emerge as the third-largest economy in the world. At present, India is the planet's fifth largest economy behind the US, China, Japan and Germany.
However, the Indian Prime Minister warned against the three evils of corruption, nepotism (read dynastic politics), and appeasement, which he emphasized were the biggest hurdles in India's development.
"If we want to achieve our dreams, 'mukti' (freedom) from three evils -
corruption, nepotism, and appeasement is necessary," Modi observed.
