Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Egypt and the UAE have been invited to join the BRICS group of nations as full-fledged members.
The major announcement was made by South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa as he read out the Johannesburg II Declaration adopted on Tuesday.

"We have decided to invite the Argentine Republic, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to become full members of BRICS. The membership will take effect from January 1, 2024," Ramaphosa said at the BRICS summit in South Africa.

The admission of the new members to the gropuing is the first phase of BRICS expansion, Ramaphosa added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated nations that will assume BRICS membership starting from January 1, 2024, and said that the South African President showed "amazing diplomatic skill" when discussing issues of expanding BRICS.

Brazil's President Lula da Silva said in his remarks that BRICS had launched a working group to study a reference currency for BRICS. President Putin, in his return, expressed confidence that the unified currency issue would be resolved eventually.
The addition of new members to the grouping will further strengthen BRICS as organization and foster multipolar world order, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
Modi also took a moment to thank the whole scientific community for congratulations on India's lunar mission, saying that Chandrayaan-3's success is a success of science.
"Isolation' as an American weapon has been defeated forever, Russian foreign ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova posted ahead of the press conference of the BRICS leaders.

BRICS Leaders Agree on Expansion Criteria

The three-day summit of BRICS — the group uniting the world's largest developing economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — began in the South African capital of Johannesburg on Tuesday.
It is attended by the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa. Russia is represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Russian President Vladimir Putin takes part in the summit via videoconference.
On Wednesday, BRICS leaders agreed to expand the club of major rising economies and adopted criteria for entry.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told the summit he supported opening the door to new members and "welcomes moving forward with consensus".

A total of 23 states have expressed their desire to join BRICS in the past few months, including Argentina, Iran, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
It’s worth noting that no new members have been admitted to BRICS since South Africa entered the grouping in 2010.
