Security Ramped Up in New Delhi as India Braces for G-20 Leaders' Summit
16:59 25.08.2023 (Updated: 19:14 28.08.2023) Exclusive
The G-20 Summit is scheduled to take place at the newly-constructed Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on 9-10 September
India has been coordinating with various foreign agencies for the
security arrangements in New Delhi during the G-20 Summit, a senior police official has told Sputnik India.
“Their teams have already visited Delhi. Many meetings have been held,” Delhi Police’s Joint Commissioner Aalap Patel said.
Patel disclosed that the foreign heads of states and their delegations will start arriving in New Delhi through Air Force Station (AFS) Palam and the Indira Gandhi International Airport on September 7.
He stated that the foreign delegates will be staying in 18 hotels across the National Capital Region (NCR), of which two are located in Gurugram (in neighbouring
Haryana).
“On the 9th, they will be coming down to the Bharat Mandapam for the inaugural session of the Summit. Then, they would leave for the hotels and be back in the evening for a gala dinner organized by the Indian G-20 Presidency,” the police official said.
Patel said that the delegates would be visiting Rajghat (a memorial complex dedicated to
Mahatma Gandhi) on the morning of September 10, before heading back to the G-20 Summit venue for the concluding session.
The official also revealed that the spouses of the heads of states are scheduled to pay a visit to the Pusa Institute (a government backed agricultural research institution) and the National Gallery of Modern Art during the visit.
Over 10,000 Security Personnel to Be Deployed in Delhi
Delhi Police will deploy over 10,000 security personnel on the streets of India’s National Capital to ensure “smooth movement” of delegates and officials during the G-20 Summit, police officials told a special briefing in New Delhi on Friday.
Surender Singh Yadav, the Special Commissioner of Delhi Police, said that “traffic restrictions” will be put in place in the
New Delhi area as well as at the Ring Road and the Delhi’s borders.
He said that the traffic restrictions will take effect from the midnight of 7-8 September and continue till the evening of 10th September.
“The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) area will be a controlled zone wherein the bus services will not be available. The commercial establishments (markets) will remain closed during the time the restrictions are in effect,” Yadav said.
Most of the central government establishments and foreign embassies in New Delhi are located within the NDMC area.
The police official added that private vehicles and commercial vehicles entering the NDMC area without proper accreditation and those not belonging to residents will be barred entry, unless there is a medical emergency or other contingency. The restrictions won't apply to those carrying out “essential services'', including the supply of milk, food and medical supplies.
Yadav said that Delhi Metro services will continue to ply on the route.
He said that restrictions will also be in place at Ring Road, a key road encircling Delhi.
Yadav also informed media persons that the “unnecessary movement” of most of the vehicles travelling to Delhi from other states will be controlled for the days of the summit.
“I would appeal to people of Delhi to avoid unnecessary travel on the between 8-10 in view of the G-20 Summit. Every citizen has a stake in the successful organizing of the event… We have studied traffic arrangements during other previous international events such as the G-20 Summit in Bali and international events in Beijing. Our restrictions are more liberal than those events,” Yadav stated.
