India has emerged as Russia's second-largest crude importer after China in the wake of unilateral Western sanctions imposed on the Eurasian nation following its special military operation in Ukraine.
India's Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has said that the purchase of Russian oil is in the South Asian country's national interest and New Delhi should not feel any kind of pressure to take decisions that are for the benefit of its citizens.

"We must build relations with the world. But when it comes to what benefits us, we should not back down. I should not expose our people to fuel inflation if I can find a way. The prime minister had said, 'take a stand that benefits India'. We did that," India's top diplomat stated on Tuesday.

India's Imports Surge to Record Levels

Recent estimates suggest that India's oil imports from Russia have registered a 440 percent growth during the January-July period compared to the corresponding time frame last year.
For two months in succession, New Delhi has imported over two million barrels per day (bpd) from Moscow, taking the latter's contribution to the former's oil basket to nearly 45 percent.
At present, Russia's crude purchases are more than the combined imports of black gold from traditional suppliers like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Iraq.

Moreover, this isn't the first time India's top diplomat has voiced his support for New Delhi over the issue.
Previously, he slammed European nations for criticizing India's decision to acquire oil from Russia, pointing out how these developed countries were working to ensure their energy security, but were telling New Delhi not to prioritize it.
"Somewhere Europe has to grow out of the mindset that Europe's problems are the world's problems but the world's problems are not Europe’s problems. That if it is you, it's yours, if it is me it is ours. I see reflections of that," he noted.
