G-20 Summit Declaration All Set to Be Adopted, India's Sherpa Says
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who will be leading the Russian delegation at the G-20 Summit, has said that a general declaration at the meeting won’t be possible if Moscow’s position on Ukraine wasn’t reflected in it.
India’s G-20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant has set that a G-20 Summit declaration is all set to be adopted at the upcoming leaders’ meeting in New Delhi on 9-10 September.
Kant said on Wednesday evening that the G-20 Sherpas have been taking steady steps towards drafting a summit declaration at the ongoing meeting of Sherpas in Nuh on the outskirts of the Indian national capital.
The ongoing meeting that began on 4 September is the fourth and final meeting of G-20 sherpas ahead of the Summit.
Kant expressed confidence that a Joint Declaration would mark a step towards “strengthening global cooperation”.
Differences Over Ukraine-related Paragraphs
The statement from the Indian G-20 Sherpa comes amid news reports citing
European Union officials claiming that the draft declaration text presented by India wasn’t
“sufficient for G7 and the EU”.
New Delhi has also
rejected west-led calls to invite Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky as a "guest" at the Summit. The Ukrainian President attended the previous G-20 Summit in Bali last November.
Meanwhile, the Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has expressed his understanding of Moscow’s concerns on the language of Ukraine-related paragraphs in the G-20 final document.
Jaishankar said in a media interview this week that it was natural for any country to want to reflect its “national position” in multilateral documents.
