As per the country's constitutional rules, general elections in Pakistan were originally due in November 2023.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday announced that national polls in the South Asian Islamic nation will be held in the last week of January next year, almost two and half months later than expected.
Though the commission did not reveal why the elections were postponed, the prime reason behind the delay appears to be the ongoing delimitation exercise that the electoral body is currently undertaking in the country.

Delimitation Exercise Before Polls

the ECP noted that redrawing of electoral boundaries was underway in Pakistan and a provisional list on the matter, will be made available on September 27.
However, the whole process will take two more months, as the constitutional body would allow citizens to file objections besides taking suggestions from them on delimitations.
The final list of National Assemblies after the delimitation exercise will be published on ECP's website on November 30.
This would be followed by a 54-day window for political parties to campaign before the elections will be conducted in the last week of January 2024.

Uncertainty Over Polls in Pakistan Ends

The ECP's announcement put an end to months of speculation regarding the fate of national polls in Pakistan.
Multiple parties, including the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) headed by incarcerated former premier Imran Khan and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led by ex-Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, previously demanded that the ECP organize elections in the country at the earliest.
