On Monday, the Indian women's team rewrote history books as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side claimed the country's maiden gold medal in cricket in the Asian Games presently held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou.Team India's historic feat came after they defeated Asian neighbours Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final held at the Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field.Led by Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, the Women in Blue, posted a competitive total of 116/7 on the board after they won the toss and chose to bat first. In reply, the Sri Lankans only managed to score 97/8 in their allotted 20 overs, helping the Indians to their first yellow metal in cricket in a quadrennial sports competition.Previously, the Indian women's cricket team suffered heartbreaks in other big-ticket tournaments, like the ICC Women's World Cup in 2017, having lost the final to England by just nine runs.Interestingly, cricket, a widely popular sport in South Asia, was not a discipline in multi-disciplinary sports events earlier. However, things have changed lately, with cricket featuring in last year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and this year's Asian Games.Furthermore, there is speculation that cricket will be inducted into the Olympics in the 2028 edition set to be held in Los Angeles.

Team India Claims Historic Gold in Women's Cricket in Asian Games
16:34 25.09.2023 (Updated: 17:54 25.09.2023) Cricket first featured in the Guangzhou Asian Games in China in 2010, where Bangladesh and Pakistan grabbed gold medals in the men's and women's events respectively.
On Monday, the Indian women's team rewrote history books as the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side claimed the country's maiden gold medal in cricket in the Asian Games presently held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou.
Team India's historic feat came after they defeated Asian neighbours Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final held at the
Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field.
Led by Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, the Women in Blue, posted a competitive total of 116/7 on the board after they won the toss and chose to bat first.
In reply, the Sri Lankans only managed to score 97/8 in their allotted 20 overs, helping the Indians to their first yellow metal in cricket in a quadrennial sports competition.
More than satisfaction, this would have come as a sigh of relief to Harmanpreet and her girls, given that they had lost a closely contested gold medal clash to Australia at last year's Commonwealth Games (CWG).
Previously, the Indian women's cricket team suffered heartbreaks in other big-ticket tournaments, like the ICC Women's World Cup in 2017, having lost the final to England by just nine runs.
Interestingly, cricket, a widely popular sport in South Asia, was not a discipline in multi-disciplinary sports events earlier. However, things have changed lately, with cricket featuring in last year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and this year's Asian Games.
Furthermore, there is speculation that cricket will be inducted into the Olympics in the 2028 edition set to be held in Los Angeles.
