Pakistan Receives Maiden LPG Shipment From Russia
17:02 27.09.2023 (Updated: 10:31 29.09.2023) For Pakistan, energy imports make up a big chunk of its external payments. Imports from Russia are a big respite during the economic crisis. The nation's acute balance of payments challenge has put it at risk of defaulting on its external debt.
Pakistan has received its maiden shipment of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) from Russia, the Islamabad-located Russian embassy has said, adding that: "consultations on the second shipment are underway".
This has come
months after Pakistan commenced importing the Russian crude.
LPG is the fuel essential for everyday life since it's used in various household appliances for cooking, heating, and hot water.
According to the Russian embassy, the shipment was delivered with the help of Iran. It has come after Pakistan received its first delivery of Russian crude after a deal was signed between the two countries earlier this year.
A media report quoted Mohammad Reza Berahmand, chairman of the Iranian Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Sarakhs, divulging that a total of 100,000 tons of Russian LPG were supplied to Pakistan "via the Iranian highway" through the Serakhs special economic zone in the north-east of the country.
He added that the shipment was delivered to the SEZ by rail. Later, it was transported by road to the Reimadan crossing point in the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchistan.
"The transportation of a batch of LPG from Russia by our country's private transport firms was achieved within six months, and now this process has been completed”, Berahmand stated.
The maiden gas import is Pakistan's second major purchase of Russian energy.
