Israel-Hamas Conflict: Relevance for India
11:15 10.10.2023 (Updated: 11:16 10.10.2023) Israel's widely acclaimed Iron Dome missile system was overwhelmed by a barrage of rockets, roughly around 5,000, fired by Palestinian military movement Hamas on Saturday.
Israel's military equipment isn't foolproof and India must learn a lesson from Hamas' recent attack on the Jewish state and effectively address issues related to terrorism, a New Delhi-based strategic affairs expert has told Sputnik India.
The comments of defense pundit Qamar Agha came days after Israel announced a "state of war" following a surprise attack by Hamas in the southern parts
of the country that has left over 1,300 dead on both sides.
It is one of the bloodiest escalations between the Gaza-based Hamas and Israel, that have waged multiple wars in the last two decades.
Against this context, Agha spoke about the new measures New Delhi should take to avoid a similar situation in the South Asian nation.
According to him, India has its intelligence agencies, which are gradually improving, but they too experience occasional breakdowns. Past incidents, such as the attacks on the Parliament House and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, underscore the need for enhanced security measures.
"However, despite purchasing security equipment worth hundreds of millions of dollars from Israel, it did not prove effective, particularly in hilly regions,
necessitating further expenditures," Agha told Sputnik India on Monday.
He suggested that countries dealing with security matters should take a lesson from this experience, understanding that security is not foolproof, and political problems must be addressed to effectively tackle terrorism.
Two other military specialists questioned the efficacy of Israeli defense products, particularly the Iron Dome missile shield of the country.
"A classic thing happened: over-expenditure of anti-missile missiles and overload of the complex's guidance channels. What made it possible was the thorough work of Hamas intelligence: it 'exactly knew the capabilities of Israel's air defense' and carefully calculated the number of missiles launched," Russian defense commentator Alexey Leonkov pointed out.
On the other hand, Russian military historian Yuri Knutov emphasized that the Iron Dome cannot tackle a vast number of rockets, the chances of the air defense system increase if more than 100 missiles are fired into Israel at the same time.
"In this case, the Iron Dome has a probability of defeat of 90-100%. If the raid is more intense, that is, at least about 100 missiles, then, in general, as a rule, the Iron Dome and the tasks facing it cannot cope and up to 90% of the missiles
overcome its protection," Knutov explained.
