While New Delhi has condemned the attack by Hamas against Israel, it has also re-affirmed its support for a sovereign and independent Palestine.
Scores of university students marching towards the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi were detained by police near the diplomatic mission.
The protest march was organized by Students' Federation of India (SFI), a left-wing organization, to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.
The protesters comprised students from Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and activists.
The protest was stopped by a heavy security cordon just hundreds of metres away from the embassy. In anticipation of the protest, Delhi Police imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which prevents a gathering of four or more people.
The protestors were detained and taken away in four to five buses to the nearby police station. It is unclear if the protestors have been formally charged by police for violating prohibitory orders.

Want Our Message to Reach the Israel Ambassador in India: Protestors

One of the detained protestors told Sputnik India that she had come to the protest against the "bombing of Gaza" by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Protestors remained defiant about violating the prohibitory orders, saying that they were protesting to just make their "dissent known" to the world.

"We want the Israeli ambassador in India to know that this must stop. We understand that your population is also under a lot of threat, but there is a history behind it. The process of colonization by Israel in Palestinian territories has to stop," a protestor said.

The protest in New Delhi comes against the backdrop of hostilities between IDF and Hamas nearing almost two weeks, in the wake of the deadly terrorist attack by Hamas on 7 October.
Around 1,400 civilians were left dead in the Hamas' attack.
The retaliatory strikes by the IDF in Gaza have led to at least 4,741 deaths, according to Gaza authorities.
