Kaur accused US President Joe Biden of justifying "genocide against Palestinians" while Israel attacks Gaza and restricts aid for the Gaza residents.
Renowned Indo-Canadian poet Rupi Kaur has declined a White House invitation to its Diwali event, expressing her protest against the US government's support to Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
“Received an invitation from the Biden administration for a
Diwali event being held by the Vice President on November 8,” Kaur wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I’m surprised this administration finds it acceptable to celebrate Diwali when their support of the current atrocities against Palestinians represent the exact opposite of what this holiday means to many of us,” wrote Kaur, sharing a letter along with her post.
US Vice President Kamala Harris will host the
annual Diwali gathering in the White House on Wednesday.
“I refuse any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population – 50% of whom are children,” Kaur stressed.
The poet said she always used the Diwali holiday “to reflect on what it means to fight for freedom against oppression”.
Over 10,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its military campaign in the Gaza Strip in response to the 7th October Hamas attack, apalestinian militant movement. While the
Israeli government pledged to end Hamas, most of the victims of the attack reportedly remain children and women.
US President Biden on 10 October visited Israel and said that he’d support Israel and also approved a $14.3bn military aid package to Israel.
However, now the Biden administration is facing backlash from Arab countries and reportedly from its people as well.
Kaur also urged the South Asian community to hold the
Biden administration accountable for its support to Israel and added that as a Sikh woman, she would not allow her "likeness to be used in whitewashing this administration’s actions.”
