Russia Holds Joint Naval Drills With India in Bay of Bengal: Defence Ministry
15:20 23.11.2023 (Updated: 17:10 23.11.2023) Joint naval exercises between Russia and India have concluded in the Bay of Bengal, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.
Warships of the Russian and Indian navies have concluded joint drills in the Bay of Bengal, with artillery firing at sea and air targets, the Russian Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.
“In the Bay of Bengal, a two-day naval drill between Russia and India came to an end. Russia was represented by the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Tributs and the medium sea tanker Pechenga of the Pacific Fleet. The destroyer Ranvijay and the corvette Kiltan were represented by the Indian Navy”, the message reads.
The purpose of the exercises was to prepare the Russian and Indian navies to
jointly counter foreign threats and ensure the safety of civilian shipping in the Asia-Pacific region.
The sailors practised communication skills while coordinating manoeuvres. While on the move, the crews sharpened their resupply skills, and Indian Navy helicopter pilots made a deck landing on a Russian ship. In response, Indian destroyer landing approaches were rehearsed by Russian pilots.
The exercises concluded with night-time
artillery firing at air and sea targets.
Following the joint manoeuvres, the crews of the
Russian and Indian ships held a farewell ceremony, moving in parallel and expressing gratitude towards each other for their joint drills.
India and Russia completed the 12th iteration of their biennial Indra Navy exercise in the Baltic Sea in 2021. The US expressed disapproval of the joint exercise with Russia, but India dismissed it and continued the drill.
Last Month, Russia also conducted its first-ever
joint naval exercise with Myanmar known as the Myanmar-Russia Maritime Security Exercise (MARUMEX), strengthening their security cooperation with both ships and aircraft.
