The reports of the AAP's Punjab unit rejecting an alliance with the Congress came a day after the newly formed opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A. met in Delhi on Tuesday.
Opposition unity appears to be in tatters as local media sources claim the Punjab unit of the Aam Aadmi Party is not interested in an alliance with the Congress for the 2024 general elections.
Notably, the AAP had unseated the Congress in the 2022 state assembly elections.
This is not the first time that the rift in the opposition has emerged from Punjab. Earlier in September, Anmol Gagan Mann, a minister in the AAP-led Punjab government, said the party would contest all 13 seats in the 2024 general elections.
Apart from this, the state unit of the Congress had also expressed concern over the alliance with the AAP in the state, with Punjab unit chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring stating that the party high command had asked workers to prepare for all seats in the state.
Warring even said he was confident that no decision would be taken without the consent of the state unit leaders and workers.
However, the AAP state unit's statements are not the party's final position and the final decision will be taken by national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who has left for a 10-day Vipassan meditation camp.
The reports come a day after members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.), including Congress and AAP, held a meeting in Delhi.
