In just less than 24 hours, former PM Imran Khan was pronounced guilty in yet another case. Earlier, on Tuesday, Imran Khan, the former Pakistani premier, received a 10-year sentence for the charge of divulging state secrets.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi on Wednesday were sentenced to 14 years behind bars in the Toshakhana case, according to Pakistan's media.
The couple have also been barred from holding any public office for 10 years and also fined 787 million Pakistani Rupees ($2.8 million) each, Pakistani media reported. The couple married in 2018, months before Khan was elected prime minister.
The Toshakhana case refers to a series of corruption charges against Khan for allegedly submitting bogus details on
gifts worth millions he received from foreign governments while in office.
Judge Mohammad Bashir delivered the sentence at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where Khan is currently incarcerated. However, Khan’s wife was absent from the courtroom during the sentencing.
Both Khan and Bibi had maintained their innocence when the charges were initially presented in a court at the prison.
“Completely destruction of any existing law in Pakistan in 2 days. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have faced yet another kangaroo trial in which no right to defence was given to both. Like cipher, this case has no basis for standing in any Higher court. It’s shameful how a complete disregard and mockery of law is in place,” PTI said in a post on X.
