Pakistan Election Commission Forms Committee to Look Into Corruption Charges
Poll-rigging allegations have created more problems for the Pakistan Election Commission, which has already been burdened with ensuring a democratically elected government in the country.
Rejecting poll-rigging charges and involvement of its officials in corrupt practices during the recently concluded Pakistan National Assembly elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan has formed a high-level committee to probe the allegations, reports said.
Former Commissioner of Rawalpindi Liaquat Ali Chattha has reportedly alleged that the elections were rigged in favour of the Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N.
He was quoted as saying, “I am taking the responsibility for all this wrongdoing and telling you that the chief election commissioner and the chief justice are also completely involved in this". Responding to his charges, the Pakistan Election Commission decided to get the charges probed and formed the committee to do so, the reports added.
"The Election Commission of Pakistan strongly rejects the allegations levelled by the Commissioner Rawalpindi on the chief election commissioner or the election commission and no official of the election commission never issued any instructions regarding changing the election results to the Commissioner Rawalpindi," the commission was quoted as saying by the media.
"Neither is the commissioner of any division ever appointed as a DRO, RO or presiding officer, nor do they ever play a direct role in the conduct of elections", the commission added.
Meanwhile, all other parties, including former Pakistani Prime Minister
Imran Khan's PTI, have supported the charges of poll-rigging.
