Passing through Russia's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Northern Sea Route is expected to be navigable year-round in coming years due to the melting of ice in the Arctic Ocean.
Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has said that the developing of the 'Polar Route', or the Northern Sea Route (NSR), should be of long-term interest to Europe, as he addressed a conference attended by several European foreign ministers in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.
Addressing the Second Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)-India Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave, Jaishankar remarked that the recent events in the Red Sea have reminded the global community about the "fragility" of the existing connectivity structures.
"The need today is to create multiple connectivity corridors, supporting corridors of connectivity with their inbuilt resilience... And it is vital because at either end of these, you have two big consumption centres--Europe and India," the foreign minister remarked.
He pointed out that the India-Middle-East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) wasn't the only initiative that New Delhi had been seeking to develop to boost connectivity.
"There is a longer one which is being worked through Iran," he said, referring to the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
Jaishankar went on state that that Polar Route was a "potential connectivity channel" which would be of long-term interest to Europe.

"One of them is the Polar Route... There is today a serious assumption that the Polar Route could open up a different logistical pathway between India and Europe, which will go through the Indo-Pacific," Jaishankar said.

India-Russia Cooperation in Developing Northern Sea Route

The remarks by Jaishankar on the signifance of the Northern Sea Route come amid expanding cooperation between Russia and India, as well as Russia and China, to develop the route which passes through Arctic Ocean north of Russia.
During a visit to Moscow in December, Jaishankar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed efforts to develop the Northern Sea Route, describing it as a "promising avenue of cooperation" due to its potential to cut travelling time between Russia and Europe, and Asia.
On a visit to Vladivostok last September, India's Ports, Shipping and Waterways minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his keenness to collaborate with Moscow on the connectivity route.
During his talks with AO Chekunkov, Russia's Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, the two sides agreed to train Indian seafarers in polar and Arctic waters at Russian Maritime Training Institute in Vladivostok.
