Algeria's resolution was voted down by Washington, with London abstaining, on Tuesday. Pakistan's UN ambassador expressed regret over the situation, highlighting that it is indicative of flaws in the global governance system.
Pakistan's chief diplomat at the United Nations criticized the US for vetoing another resolution seeking a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
The veto was seen as a reflection of the "paralysis" within the Security Council that has contributed to the death of over 20,000 Palestinians, nearly two-thirds of which are women and children.
The US was the sole Security Council country that voted against Algeria's resolution, while the United Kingdom abstained.
Pakistan's UN Ambassador Munir Akram, who previously labeled the Gaza conflict as "a war against the Palestinian people," expressed regret over the situation, highlighting that it was indicative of flaws in the global governance system.

"Veto of an Algerian draft resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza is a sad reflection of the paralysis of UNSC," Akram conveyed in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).

He continued, stating, " The Council is failing the beleaguered people of Gaza."

He also affirmed, “It also validates Pakistan & the UfC’s [Uniting for Consensus’] opposition to the addition of new permanent members in UNSC."

The UfC, also known as the Coffee Club, emerged in the 1990s and, led by Italy, opposes the expansion of permanent seats on the UN Security Council. Specifically, it counters the aspirations of the G4 nations—Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan.
Pakistan is aligned with this group advocating for a reform approach based on consensus, emphasizing the augmentation of non-permanent seats to enhance the democratic and representative nature of the council.
