With a focus on indigenous manufacturing of military hardware, the Indian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has been inking contracts with both public and private sector firms in recent years.
Bolstering India's ongoing efforts towards self-reliance (Aatmnirbharta) in the field of production of military hardware, the Indian Ministry of Defense on Friday announced the signing of five contracts, including the supply of Brahmos missiles and engines for MiG-29 aircraft.
The overall value of the contracts inked in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi is $4.7 billion, the Ministry of Defense said in a release.
While a deal to procure aero-engines for the Russian-origin MiG-29 combat jets has been agreed upon with the state-run aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), contracts to supply Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) and High-Power Radar (HPR) have been finalized with the private-sector company Larsen & Toubro Limited.
The MoD would shell out over $630 million to acquire engines for MiG-29 from HAL.
"These Aero Engines are expected to fulfill the need of Indian Air Force (IAF) to sustain the operational capability of the MiG-29 fleet for the residual service life," the Ministry added.
Furthermore, two more agreements were signed with BrahMos Aerospace, the manufacturers of the world's fastest missile BrahMos, for the acquisition of ship-borne missiles for warships as well as conventional projectiles for the country's navy.
The total estimated cost of procurement of BrahMos missiles for the Indian Navy is pegged at approximately $2.5 billion.
