Following the Taliban's* return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, many Sikhs and Hindus left the country and sought refuge in India and other sovereign states. However, the hardline Islamic movement seemed to have softened its stance towards these minorities of late.
India has welcomed the Taliban's move to return private land to religious minorities - Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan, with the External Affairs Ministry terming the decision as a "positive development."
"We have seen reports on this issue. If the Taliban administration has decided to restore property rights to their citizens belonging to the Afghan Hindu and Sikh community, we see this as a positive development," Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry said during a media briefing in New Delhi on Friday evening.
Earlier this week, the Taliban confirmed that it had established a commission to bring back Afghan Hindus and Sikhs who previously held prominent positions in the nation's economy and lived there for decades.

Suhail Shaheen, who heads the Islamic group's political bureau in Doha, stated that the return of these religious minorities will be supervised by the Taliban's Ministry of Justice.

As part of the plan, the Islamic Emirate will get back land parcels that were forcefully taken over by Western allied militias or warlords from Afghanistan's Hindus and Sikhs.

Once the Taliban completes the reclamation process, the private properties will be returned to their respective Hindu and Sikh owners.
