Muizzu's Party Wins Landslide Victory in Maldives Parliamentary Polls
14:43 22.04.2024 (Updated: 14:50 22.04.2024) Mohamed Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) has secured 68 of the initial 89 seats announced, as reported by the Elections Commission of Maldives, surpassing the threshold for a supermajority in the 93-member parliament, the Majlis.
The main governing party, the People’s National Congress (PNC) of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has attained a supermajority in the parliament, securing nearly 70 seats out of the total.
In the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, over 200,000 Maldivians cast their votes, with 326 candidates vying for 93 seats in the upcoming parliamentary assembly, which includes six new seats. The PNC fielded candidates for 90 seats.
Preliminary results indicate that the PNC has won 68 seats, constituting more than two-thirds of the parliament. Conversely, the main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), faced a significant setback, managing to secure only 10 seats out of the 89 contested.
The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), an ally of the PNC, clinched two seats, while the Maldives National Party (MNP), another ally, secured one seat. The Jumhoory Party (JP) secured one seat, and 11 independent candidates also emerged victorious.
However, The Democrats and Adhaalath Party (AP) failed to secure any seats in the elections.
The PNC's decisive triumph in Sunday's elections mirrors the historic victory of the MDP in the 2019 elections. Back then, while in power, the MDP secured a supermajority with 64 seats, while the opposition coalition of the PPM-PNC managed to secure only eight seats.
In the 2014 elections, the then-governing PPM secured the majority of seats.
The sole
ruling party to fall short of a majority while in power was the MDP, as seen in the 2009 elections.
