Polling for Phase 2 of 2024 Lok Sabha Polls Underway in 13 States, UTs

India, the world's largest democracy, is going to the polls. The BJP-led NDA is seeking a third consecutive term, while the Congress-led I.N.D.I.A. is looking forward to replacing the incumbent government.
Polling for the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in 13 states and union territories began at 7 am (IST) on Friday and close at 6 pm (IST).
More than 1,200 candidates are contesting for 88 seats in the second phase.
The seats going to the polls are all 20 seats in Kerala, 14 of the 28 seats in Karnataka, 13 seats in Rajasthan, eight seats each in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, seven seats in Madhya Pradesh, five seats each in Assam and Bihar, three seats each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, and one seat each in Manipur, Tripura and Jammu and Kashmir.
The prominent candidates in the second phase are Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP's Tejasvi Surya, Hema Malini and Arun Govil, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's brother DK Suresh and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.

High Voter Turnout Strengthens Democracy: Modi

Ahead of polling for the second phase, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Federal Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other politicians urged people of the country to exercise their right to vote.
“Urging everyone in constituencies voting today, in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, to participate in record numbers. A high voter turnout strengthens our democracy. I especially urge our young voters and women voters to turn out in great numbers. Your vote is your voice!,” Modi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, requesting citizens to participate in the biggest festival of democracy, Federal Home Minister Amit Shah asked them to “choose a government that prioritises the development of the country, ensures border security, restores heritage, and makes powerful decisions in the national interest”.
On the other hand, Congress parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi said the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are historic and will decide the fate of the country.
“Today is the second phase of this historic election which is going to decide the fate of the country. Your vote will decide whether the next government will be of 'a few billionaires' or of '140 crore Indians'. Therefore, it is the duty of every citizen to step out of their homes today and become a 'soldier of the Constitution' and vote to protect democracy,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Voter Turnout Till 11 a.m. (IST)

According to the latest data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the total voter turnout in all 13 states and Union Territories (UTs) was around 25 per cent till 11 am (IST).
The highest voter turnout was recorded in Tripura (36.42 per cent), followed by Chhattisgarh (35.47 per cent), Tripura (33.22 per cent), West Bengal (31.25 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (28.15 per cent), Assam (27.43 per cent), Rajasthan (26. 84 per cent), Jammu & Kashmir (26.61 per cent), Kerala (25.61 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (24.31 per cent), Karnataka (22.34 per cent) and Bihar (21.68 per cent), while Maharashtra had the lowest voter turnout (18.83 per cent) among all the states.
With the completion of the second phase of polling, one-third of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats will have gone to the polls.
