Afghanistan stands to gain significantly from the India-backed Chabahar Port project and plays a vital role in its successful implementation and utilisation, the Taliban* interim government said in a statement on Wednesday evening.According to the statement, the Taliban stressed that "political support" from Afghanistan was crucial to sustain the project.It noted that Chabahar offered Afghanistan an alternative route to Karachi, thus reducing the country's "dependence on a single corridor and enhancing its economic independence."Recalling the history of Chabahar, the Taliban noted that the origins of the port dated back to the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE)."During the Sassanian Empire (224–651 CE), Chabahar continued to flourish as a trading hub, connecting Persia with the Indian subcontinent and other regions," it said.It noted that India, Iran and Afghanistan signed a trilateral pact for developing Chabahar as a "transportation and trade corridor" in 2016.Addressing Challenges in Implementing the Chabahar Port ProjectThe Taliban underscored that it was imperative to forge concerted efforts among key stakeholders to fully utilise the port project and address the challenges.The interim Afghan authorities listed geopolitical stability, infrastructure development, security cooperation, trade promotion and investment and capacity building as the key factors which would enable the success of the project.Significantly, the US State Department threatened to invoke sanctions against India for signing the long-term pact with Iran this month.*under UN sanctions

Afghanistan to Gain Significantly From India-Backed Chabahar Port
India and Iran this month signed a 10-year pact with a renewable clause for the development of Chabahar Port.
Afghanistan stands to gain significantly from the India-backed Chabahar Port project and plays a vital role in its successful implementation and utilisation, the Taliban* interim government said in a statement on Wednesday evening.
According to the statement, the Taliban stressed that "political support" from Afghanistan was crucial to sustain the project.
It noted that Chabahar offered Afghanistan an alternative route to Karachi, thus reducing the country's "dependence on a single corridor and enhancing its economic independence."
“Chabahar Port facilitates trade diversification by providing access to India, Central Asia, and beyond. This diversification is crucial for Afghanistan’s economic stability and growth, allowing it to engage with multiple trading partners,” the statement read.
It stated that Chabahar provided a "direct maritime route" to the Indian Ocean, which was advantageous for carrying out trade with landlocked countries like Afghanistan and others in the region.
Recalling the history of Chabahar, the Taliban noted that the origins of the port dated back to the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE).

Afghanistan’s active participation and cooperation are essential for realizing the full potential of Chabahar Port and leveraging it as a gateway to global trade and prosperity," the Taliban statement concluded.
