India and Russia to Jointly Run Loss-Making Sri Lankan Airport
New Delhi and Moscow have a rock-solid relationship, and after running joint ventures in India, the states will now take over Sri Lanka's Mattala airport.
A joint venture between
India and
Russia will operate Sri Lanka's
loss-making airport in
Hambantota, the island nation's Minister of Aviation
Nimal Siripala de Silva has stated.
"Action will be taken during the next few weeks to handover the loss-making Mattala International Airport to a joint India-Russia venture," de Silva told reporters in Colombo on Wednesday evening.
The Mattala International Airport in Hambantota cost $209 million when it was opened in 2013. However, due to a lack of air traffic to
the cash-starved country, which suffered a sovereign default in 2022, the "emptiest" complex has become a burden on the state exchequer.
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe's government has decided to hand over the project to foreign companies.
In April, the contract for running the draft was awarded to an Indo-Russian consortium of Shaurya Aeronautics (Pvt) Ltd and Airports of Regions Management Company.
