Vietnam Seeks Defence Industry Cooperation With India Amid Growing Ties
India and Vietnam are forging a closer military partnership, with New Delhi looking to become a key player in the Southeast Asian arms market, especially with the Narendra Modi-led government putting a lot of thrust on exports of defence equipment.
Vietnam has proposed to establish close-knit ties with
India in various domains of the defence sector amid growing bilateral relations
between the two countries.
During the talks chaired by India's Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Deputy Minister of National Defence of Vietnam Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien in New Delhi, the Southeast Asian sovereign state proposed five focus areas for cooperation with the world's largest democratic nation.
Among the areas in which Vietnam is seeking to expand its cooperation with India include "delegation exchanges and dialogue, staff-talks; Service-to-Service cooperation; Education and training; and Defence Industry cooperation."
"After the meeting, the Defence Secretary and the Deputy Minister of National Defence of Vietnam signed a Letter of Intent to strengthen cooperation in the field of training including exchange of instructors and experts," India's Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Friday.
The development comes in the wake of India announcing a $300 million credit line for Vietnam to help in enhancing its maritime security on Thursday.
Notably, this isn't the first time New Delhi is assisting Hanoi in
upgrading its maritime surveillance capabilities.
Last year, it gifted Vietnam an Indian Navy corvette for patrolling on the seas.
