An official told Sputnik India that the 7,200-mile Chennai-Vladivostok Corridor became "fully operational" this year.
The Chennai-Vladivostok corridor connecting the Bay of Bengal to Russia's Far-East has been operationalised, Indian Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Monday.

"The route has been operationalised. We already have ships running from Vladivostok to Chennai and vice-versa. All our ports on the Bay of Bengal coast- be it Paradip or Vizag- are connected to this corridor," Sonowal told a press briefing in New Delhi at the launch of 'Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue’, adding that India and Russia were trading in crude oil, machine parts, textiles and food items through the corridor.

The Indian minister said that work on operationalising the corridor began as soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) to develop the connectivity route during the Indian leader's visit to Vladivostok in 2019.
India and Russia are also willing to train Indian seafarers in polar waters, as well discussing the idea of building icebreakers at Indian shipyards.

An official told Sputnik India that several Indian private shipyards have expressed an interest in developing icebreakers for Russia.

Talking about the Chabahar Port, Sonowal said that the India-owned port was already handling over 80,000 metric tonnes of cargo. "We are realising the goal of having taken over and operating this port."
Speaking about the 'Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue’, the Indian minister noted that delegates and speakers from over 60 countries were participating in the two-day event, aimed at expanding collaboration and exchange ideas with other seafaring nations.

"We want to make India No.1 country among the 139 seafaring nations, be it in port operations, shipbuilding, modernisation, recycling or other areas."

Sonowal also noted that the turnaround time at Indian ports had improved significantly in the last 10 years.
"The current turnaround time of nearly 22 hours is better than many advanced economies like the US, Australia and Singapore," Sonowal said, highlighting the progress made by the ministry over the last decade or so.
