In response to an article by former Danish Prime Minister, NATO ex-chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov argued that Rasmussen misunderstood India, Russia, and global geopolitics, making flawed and exaggerated suggestions.
Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, has slammed Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the former Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), for demanding that India snaps its strategic partnership with Russia and become a part of "alliance of democracies", which include Europe and the US.
In his article published in The Hindu on 17 January, Rasmussen opined that India's "entanglement with Moscow and Beijing" within groupings such as BRICS was "unnatural". Further, the ex-Danish PM wrote that the West was "undoubtedly frustrated" with India for its refusal to join anti-Russia sanctions in the wake of the Ukraine Conflict.
Rasmussen described Russia and China as a "threat to the global democratic world".

Rejecting these arguments in their entirety, Alipov accused the former NATO chief of "misleading Indian readers" by presenting a distorted picture of the Ukraine conflict.

Delving into post-World War II history, the Russian Ambassador noted that NATO was created in 1949 by the Euro-Atlantic nations primarily to contain their wartime ally Russia, which in turn had paid a tremendous cost to protect Europe from Nazi Germany.
"Only to witness, on the 80th anniversary of the victory in WWII, the re-emergence of Nazi ideology in Europe and Ukraine. It was NATO that rejected Russia’s proposals for developing a collective security architecture in Eurasia," he said.

Alipov recalled that NATO had continued its "eastward expansion" during Rasmussen's tenure (2009-2014) despite Russia's repeated protestations over its security concerns. Rasmussen's mistaken policies had utterly failed to keep Europe safe, he stressed.

"Mr Rasmussen has now come up with another ingenious plan. He advises that India should end its time-tested special and privileged strategic partnership with Russia (calling it “unnatural entanglement”) and join Europe and America in their anti-Russia confrontation," Alipov remarked.
Accusing the former NATO leader of trying to draw a "dividing line" between nations, Alipov pointed out that Rasmussen wasn't familiar with India's philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family) from Sanskrit texts such as the Maha Upanishad, its promotion of peace and harmonious co-existence.

The Russian Ambassador stated that Rasmussen's appeal to enlist India in the “democratic bloc’s” crusade against “autocratic regimes” reflected his bellicose mentality.

Furthermore, Alipov stated that Rasmussen's vision of turning the Quad into an "Asian NATO" ran contrary to India's policy of strategic autonomy.
"In his pipe dreams, he [Rasmussen] already sees Europe, India, and the United States marching together, unstoppable, against the united autocrats," Alipov remarked, adding that the ex-NATO chief seemed to have taken a leaf out of the playbook of the East India Company.
The Russian Ambassador said that Rasmussen had floated his ridiculous suggestion to solicit support from "India sepoys".
He slammed the western politician for suggesting that the West could offer better weapons to India than Russia, reminding the Indian public that similar tactics by NATO had led to the devastation of Ukraine by making it a "pawn" in NATO's strategy to try and encircle Russia.
