Russia would continue to be among the top crude exporters to India as the country, experts have said.In January, India's overall oil supplies from the Russia witnessed a 13% jump, with India importing approximately 1.67 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude compared to 1.48 million bpd in December 2024, according to global trade intelligence firm Kpler. In February, India is expected to have higher volumes of Russian crude before the sanctions start taking effect, he said. These measures could lead to increased shipping costs, resulting in a higher landed price of oil for importers, he noted.

India to Import More Russian Crude in February: Oil Analyst
Russia has maintained its position as the leading global supplier of crude to India for over two years. Sputnik India examines what happens to this top ranking once tougher US sanctions kick in.
Russia would continue to be among the top crude exporters to India as the country, experts have said.
In January, India's overall oil supplies from the Russia witnessed a 13% jump, with India importing approximately
1.67 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude compared to 1.48 million bpd in December 2024, according
to global trade intelligence firm Kpler.
In February, India is expected to have higher volumes of Russian crude before the sanctions start taking effect, he said. As per tracking of weekly crude data by London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) research, Russian crude supplies to India are up by 25.9% on a week-on-week this month.
"The above trend clearly shows the appetite for crude oil in India, keeping Russian crude still a considerable option in the import basket," Arpit Chandna, a Customer Success Manager, specialising in oil trade at Refinitiv, an LSEG company, told Sputnik India.
He also mentioned that crude arrivals from Saudi Arabia and Brazil are 39.1% and 48.4% higher on a month-on-month respectively.
While crude oil flows are yet to hit top gear in Asia owing to the recent trade tussle between the US and China, India has a brighter oil growth outlook moving forward, which is expected to negate the effect of sanctions, he highlighted.
As of the financial year 2024-2025, the Russian share in the Indian crude basket has been more than 30% on the monthly average basis, the expert suggested. However, there are also chances of an impact, likely from
US President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs, which
markets are still currently considering, Chandna stressed.
If the Trump administration levies tariffs on Canadian and Mexican crude oil as well, alternative sources such as Russia and Middle Eastern nations — Iraq and Saudi Arabia — could step in to meet the domestic energy demands of deficit countries in Asia, including India, he pointed out.
"Recently, India has also signed an agreement during the India Energy Week with Brazil for crude volumes which clearly indicates that BRICS nations are considering their partner countries to safeguard the crude oil flows amid rising global trade war tensions," Chandna emphasised.
Due to affordable prices and a longstanding relationship with Russia, India won't stop buying Russian Oil despite US sanctions, the commodities trader, associated with a top market data and analytics firm and wishing to remain anonymous, told Sputnik India.
The restrictions, introduced last month, are expected to have an impact, as sanctioned vessels were
responsible for transporting Russian oil to India and China. These measures could lead to increased shipping costs, resulting in a higher landed price of oil for importers, he noted.
"Nonetheless, Indian refiners are taking countermeasures, including working in close collaboration with merchants, shipping companies, and trade agents to create fresh supply chains to overcome a fresh wave of American sanctions," the observer emphasised.
