NSA Doval told Chinese FM Wang Yi that terrorism needed to be countered in all forms and manifestations to maintain peace and stability in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said after their meeting in Beijing.
There has been "positive progress" in Sino-India relations in recent months, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Indian National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval at a meeting in Beijing on Monday, according to a readout by the Chinese Embassy in India.
Doval, who is also the Special Representative (SR) on the India-China boundary matter, is in Beijing for the 20th Meeting of the Security Council Secretaries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to take place on Tuesday.
"It is essential that both sides further enhance communication, build mutual trust, and work toward resolving practical issues. Only when the dragon and elephant dance together can there be a win-win outcome," the Chinese Foreign Minister said.
Further, he said that both countries should "properly handle sensitive issues and maintain peace and tranquility in the border regions", according to the Chinese readout.
Doval said that India was willing to bolster cooperation with China in multilateral spheres and remained "fully supportive" of China's SCO presidency, the Chinese statement noted.
"As two major Asian nations, India and China can make even greater contributions to the international community," it added.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that Doval and Wang reviewed recent developments in bilateral ties and underscored the need to promote the "overall development" of the India-China bilateral relations, including by fostering greater people to people ties.
"Views were also exchanged on other bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest," the MEA statement noted.
Doval said that he looked forward to hosting Wang at a mutually convenient date for the 24th round of the Special Representative (SR) talks in India.
The last round of SR-level talks were held in December, following the disengagement pact in eastern Ladakh which led to the resolution of the over four-year long standoff in the western stretch of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The meeting, the first since the Ladakh standoff, was agreed upon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at the meeting in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit last October.
In November, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Wang on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Rio De Janeiro.
Since the leaders' meeting, both sides have also held several rounds of engagements at official levels, including reciprocal visits by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Beijing and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong to New Delhi this month.
One of the major takeaways of the improvement in bilateral ties has been the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a Hindu pilgrimage to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). The trip had remained in a suspended state since 2019 due to the Covid pandemic and later the Ladakh standoff. The first batch of pilgrims left for China this month, the MEA said.
Both sides are also discussing the resumption of sharing of hydrological data for cross-boundary rivers as well as resuming direct flight connectivity between the two countries.
