"The targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security", the Indian government has said.
In a bold-worded statement, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has called out the United States and the European Union (EU) for their double-standards on the issue of Russian oil imports.
The Indian government said that it was being "targeted" by the US and the EU for importing oil from Russia in the wake of the Ukraine Conflict in early 2022.
“India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict. The United States at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability,” the MEA statement pointed out late on Monday evening.
The Indian statement came about an hour after US President Donald Trump issued a statement on his Truth Social account, warning that the US will be “substantially raising” the tariff on Indian imports entering the US for buying and reselling Russian oil.
India rejected the US premise, stating that its energy trade with Russia was a "vital national compulsion".
“India’s imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumer. They are a necessity compelled by global market situation. However, it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,” the Indian statement noted.
Further, the MEA statement has pointed out that the EU had a bilateral trade of about 67.5 billion Euros with Russia in 2024 and a service trade of 17.5 billion Euros in 2023.
“This is significantly more than India’s total trade with Russia that year or subsequently. European imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in 2024, in fact, reached a record 16.5 million tonnes, surpassing the last record of 15.21 million tonnes in 2022,” New Delhi said.
It said that Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machinery and transport equipment.
As far as the US is concerned, the Indian statement said it continues to import from uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its Electric Vehicles (EV) industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals from Russia.
Last month, India also slammed the "unilateral sanctions" by the EU for targeting a Gujarat-based oil refinery owned by Nayara Energy, an entity partially owned by Rosneft, and called on Brussels to avoid "double standards" in energy trade.
