India Joins Russia Against US Bagram Airbase Bid: How It Impacts the Region's Power Balance?
The US has repeatedly threatened the Taliban to hand over the Bagram airbase to Washington, declaring that "bad things" would happen to Afghanistan if it doesn't do so.
Regional powers, including India, Russia, China, and seven other countries, objected to America's plans to reclaim the Bagram airbase from Afghanistan.
"They called unacceptable the attempts by countries to deploy their military infrastructure in Afghanistan and neighbouring states, since this does not serve the interests of regional peace and stability, a joint declaration of the Moscow Format Consultations on Afghanistan said on Tuesday.
The recently held Moscow Format Consultations on Afghanistan issued a strongly worded statement that opposed any kind of military presence in Afghanistan. While Bagram is not named in the statement, the fact that Trump's proclamation on Bagram airbase came just about a fortnight ago, this is being
seen and interpreted as a call against US desire to acquire Bagram, stated
Dr Priyanka Singh, an Associate Fellow at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA) in New Delhi.
"This complicates Trump's wish to regain influence in a country that they left amidst large-scale chaos and bloodshed. It will also tell upon US that India, one of its close strategic partners, has firmly stood by the resolve to oppose foreign military presence in Afghanistan (seemingly directed against the US)- that too at a forum helmed by Russia- America's archest adversary," Singh told Sputnik India.
"The Moscow Format has done some messaging in terms of the fact that the governments adjoining Afghanistan are willing to cooperate with the Taliban regime and work towards the welfare of the Afghan people," Singh stressed.
Russia becoming the first country to recognise the Taliban government is a significant development on the front. Effects will certainly show in some form in the geopolitics involving Afghanistan. How the US will react to the emerging situation, or for that matter, the group's statement per se, remains to be seen, she reckoned.
Meanwhile,
Dr Shushant VC Parashar, a geopolitics and international relations academic at the Manipal Institute of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (MISHA) in Manipal, Karnataka, believes that if the US is blocked from setting up bases in Afghanistan, it loses the quick reach and influence once provided by Bagram. This gives regional
powers more control over Afghanistan's security and signals a shift toward local decision-making.
"For the US, it means relying on distant bases and leaning more on diplomacy and partnerships instead of a military presence. At the same time, the Taliban gains some bargaining power but still faces limits due to political and rights concerns," Parashar emphasised in an interview with Sputnik India.
By opposing foreign bases in Afghanistan, India shows it wants regional countries to shape Afghanistan's future. This strengthens its voice alongside Russia and China, reinforces its role as a key stakeholder, and signals that India favours stability through cooperation and diplomacy rather than military presence, the strategic affairs analyst summed up.
