Modi Welcomes First Phase of Trump's Hamas-Israel Peace Plan
In an interview with Fox News, US President Donald Trump said that the remaining hostages would be released by Monday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the first phase of the US President Donald Trump-backed peace plan between Israel and Hamas.
"This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM (Benjamin) Netanyahu," Modi posted on social media, soon after the US President announced the first phase of the plan following the successful negotiations for a hostage deal at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. The negotiations were attended by Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani, US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff as well as Israeli and Hamas negotiators.
The Indian PM expressed hope that the release of the hostages and
enhanced humanitarian assistance into the
Gaza Strip would bring respite to the population and pave the way for a "lasting peace".
Earlier, announcing the deal, Trump said that the remaining (around 40)
hostages in Hamas captivity would be released soon and Israel would withdraw its troops from Gaza to an agreed upon line in a bid to achieve "strong, durable, and an everlasting peace". He assured that all parties would be "treated fairly" in the US-backed ceasefire talks.
"This is a great day for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, all surrounding nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this historic and unprecedented event happen. Blessed are the peacemakers," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that all the remaining hostages would be released. He described the deal as "a diplomatic success and a national and moral victory for the State of Israel".
"From the beginning, I made it clear: we will not rest until all our hostages return and all our goals are achieved. Through steadfast resolve, powerful military action, and the great efforts of our great friend and ally President Trump, we have reached this critical turning point," Netanyahu said in a statement.
Further, the Israeli PM thanked President Trump for his "unwavering commitment to the safety of Israel and the freedom of our hostages".
In a statement by Hamas, the group said that it had reached an "agreement providing for the end of the war on Gaza, the withdrawal of the occupation from the Strip, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the exchange of prisoners".
