No Trump-Modi Call Happened Yesterday, MEA Clarifies
Prime Minister Modi "assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia", US President Donald Trump claimed at a White House event on Wednesday, suggesting that there was a conversation between the two leaders the same day.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said that he isn't aware of a telephone call taking place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
"On the question whether there was a conversation or a telephone call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, I am not aware of any conversation yesterday between the two leaders," Jaiswal told a weekly briefing in New Delhi on Thursday.
The US President claimed that he got an assurance from Prime Minister Modi that India won't be purchasing oil from Russia.
"It’s started. He [PM Modi] can’t do it immediately. It's a bit of a process," Trump claimed.
The MEA issued a
detailed statement on Thursday morning, reiterating its stance that India's import policies are guided entirely by the objective of safeguarding the "interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario".
"Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions," the MEA said in response to Trump's remarks.
Further, the MEA also noted that the discussions between India and the US on deepening the energy cooperation were ongoing.
In response to a separate question on United Kingdom's 90 new sanctions targeting India-based refiner
Nayara Energy (a joint venture with Russia's Rosneft) among others, the MEA Spokesperson
rejected the "unilateral sanctions" in line with the country's longstanding policy.
There should be no "double standards" on the issue of energy trade, amid continuing energy trade between EU and Russia, Jaiswal stressed.
"The Government of India considers the provision of energy security a responsibility of paramount importance to meet the basic needs of its citizens. Indian companies source energy supplies from around the world while taking overall market conditions into account," the MEA Spokesperson remarked.
India Fully Committed to Afghanistan's Sovereignty: MEA
In response to questions on recent clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the MEA said that it was "closely monitoring" the situation.
"Three things are clear – one, that Pakistan hosts terrorist organizations and sponsors terrorist activities, two, it is an old practice of Pakistan to blame its neighbors for its own internal failures, and three, Pakistan is infuriated with Afghanistan exercising sovereignty over its own territories," Jaiswal told the briefing.
India
remains fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan, the MEA Spokesperson emphasized.
Further, Jaiswal also informed the briefing that the Indian technical mission in Afghanistan will transition to the status of an embassy in the next few days.
The announcement with regards to the
upgrading of the Indian technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy was made by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar during his meeting Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi last week.
