India and Russia are close partners, especially in the defence domain, with the latter providing almost everything - from battle tanks to fighter jets to helicopters to submarines and warships to the Indian Armed Forces.
India and Russia held discussions to strengthen defence engagements between the two strategic partners, including ways to kickstart new initiatives, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement on Wednesday.
"The 5th Meeting of the Working Group on Military Cooperation of India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military & Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC) took place in Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi on October 28-29, 2025," the statement said.
While the Indians were represented by the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, the Russians saw the Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, Lt General Dylevsky Igor Nikolayevich, taking part in the meeting from their side.
"The discussions focused on strengthening the ongoing defence engagements between the two sides and mulled on new initiatives under the ambit of the existing bilateral cooperation mechanism," the statement highlighted.
Notably, India and Russia have been holding talks for the acquisition of new-age weapons such as the S-400 and the S-57 stealth fighter, as the former ramps up modernisation of its air force in particular.
The S-400 played a pivotal role in Operation Sindoor earlier this year, neutralising wave after wave of Pakistani swarm drones and missiles.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) chief, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, has heaped rich praise on the widely acclaimed Russian-manufactured air defence system, terming it a "game-changer" during the brief conflict with Pakistan in May 2025.
"Long range-SAM (LR-SAM) that we had bought, S-400, they turned out to be a game changer in this. Their long-range radars and missile systems could threaten the enemy aircraft well inside their own territory. So, we were able to do something such that they could not operate even in their own territory. Their range was more than the range of their weapons, so they could never even come up to the weapon release range without being threatened and those who came had to face damage. So, this was a game-changer," Singh said during his address at the annual meeting of the Air Force Association last month.
