At the weekly briefing, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed the importance of ties with Moscow for New Delhi, while addressing a question about US pressure on India-Russia ties.
India and Russia held the 23rd Working Group Meeting of the India–Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation and Defence Industry in Moscow, according to a post by an Indian Defence Ministry handle on Thursday evening.
The meeting, which focussed on defence co-production, was co-chaired by Indian Defence Ministry official Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production) and Andrey Boytsov, First Deputy Director, FSMTC, from Russia.

“Deliberations on issues related to military-technical cooperation across tri-services and research and development were held,” the Indian statement said.

The discussions culminated in the signing of a protocol outlining areas of mutual cooperation, collaboration and mutual growth, it said.

During their Russia visit, the Indian delegation, which also included the Chief Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Dr DK Sunil, also visited the JSC UEC-Klimov Plant in Saint Petersburg on Thursday.
The Indian statement described the UEC-Klimov Plant as one of the "most modern facilities" specialising in the development and production of high-performance turboprop engines.
The strategic discussions focussed on joint projects, focussing on "maximizing localization of critical manufacturing processes".
The India-Russia discussions take place just days after HAL signed a landmark deal with JSC United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) for producing SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft in India, which will be the first passenger plane to be entirely manufactured in India.
Meanwhile, an Indian parliamentary delegation comprising ruling BJP and opposition MPs- Rajkumar Chahar, CN Manjunath and V Sivadasan- held talks with Russian lawmakers on the margins of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly on Social and Cultural Affairs in Moscow on Thursday, Manjunath said on Friday.

"On the sidelines of the Assembly, bilateral discussions were held with Russian Members of Parliament on matters of mutual interest, further strengthening the long-standing ties between India and Russia," he said.

The Indian delegation said that "India continues to share a deep sense of warmth and friendship with the people of Russia".

The Assembly, which witnessed the participation of lawmakers from Iran, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Australia among others, witnessed the participation of 14 resolutions in the areas of cultural heritage, prevention of illegal drug trafficking, promotion of health equity, human development, tourism cooperation, and the empowerment of women, children, and youth across Asia, the Indian delegation said.
At the weekly briefing in New Delhi on Thursday, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India and Russia were working to further enhance their engagement in several areas, economic areas, in space, in technology, on trade and several other issues.
"So, we will continue to work on the areas that we have mutually agreed on," Jaiswal said.
He also informed the briefing that New Delhi was currently "studying the implications of the American sanctions on Russian oil companies".
"So, we will have to wait. We will have to make an assessment on our own as to what sort of implications they are going to have on us," the MEA Spokesperson stated, while also emphasising that India's energy sourcing decisions were guided by market dynamics, which included "fluctuations and changes that occur in the global market".
"Our approach to sourcing fuel is shaped by our responsibility to provide energy to our people — to ensure that fuel is available at affordable prices, so that the needs of our 1.4 billion (that is, 140 crore) citizens can be met," stated Jaiswal, even as he reiterated India's stance on Russian oil purchases amid US President Donald Trump's claims.
