Low-cost drone warfare has changed the landscape of modern conflicts. For instance, both Russia and Ukraine have deployed a wide variety of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during the three-year conflict.
The Indian government is set to introduce a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the production of drones in the country and club it with research and development in the sector in a bid to reduce reliance on foreign components for their localised manufacturing, Federal Minister of Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu said on Friday.
During Operation Sindoor, India's counter-terror operation against Pakistan earlier this year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) relied on Israeli-origin Harop drones to conduct precision strikes against the neighbouring nation's air defence installations, forcing the government to focus on developing an indigenous drone manufacturing base in which even the "nuts and bolts" of UAVs would be produced locally.
"We are importing the systems right now and making the assembly. We are trying to look at another scheme to extend this PLI and link it with research-linked incentives also," Kinjarapu said during his address at TechSparks 2025.
"They (drone makers) are trying to design the ultimate drone, but getting parts from somewhere else. That's not justifying the cause of the government and policy. We want each and every nut and bolt to be manufactured here only. That's the ultimate objective for us," the minister added.
It is worth noting that Indian drone manufacturers are currently dependent on importing certain drone parts, especially motors, sensors, and batteries, which could make them vulnerable during uncertain geopolitical times.
