India's multi-tiered air defence network is currently led by the Russian-acquired S-400 system, which has the capability to detect and engage targets at a range of 400 km.
India is set to have a multi-layered air defence shield for places across the country by 2035, Shripad Naik, a minister in the Narendra Modi-led federal government, said on Thursday.
"Prime Minister announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra, aimed at expanding air defence, counter-infiltration and offensive capabilities. By 2035, it will create a comprehensive security shield for public spaces across the country," Naik, who held a press conference in New Delhi regarding structural reforms in the military sector, stated.
Naik underscored that Mission Sudarshan Chakra aims to eliminate the adversary's defence infiltrations, thereby strengthening the protective capabilities of the country.
"The mission symbolises speed, precision and decisive power, underscoring India's commitment to strategic autonomy and rapid, effective response," he explained.
This mission is inspired by the Sudarshan Chakra, the celestial discus weapon of Lord Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation.
