The S-400 proved to be a ‘game-changer’ during Operation Sindoor in May, and since then, the acquisition of additional squadrons of the widely acclaimed Russian platform has become a top priority for India.
The S-400 air defence system will be high on the agenda during Russian President Vladimir Putin's two-day visit to India on December 4 and 5, an official from the Kremlin said this week.
"S-400 is on the agenda. We will have certain members of the delegation that can discuss in detail. The only thing I will say is that our military industry is working pretty well. We have managed to enlarge the volumes of production," Russian President's Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said during a media briefing organised by Sputnik India on Tuesday.
India already operates three units of the S-400 surface-to-air missile system that were supplied to the South Asian giant as part of $5.4 billion deal for five squadrons inked in 2018.
The two remaining squadrons of the S-400 from the previous contract are scheduled for delivery in 2026, and the Government of India is expected to call on Russia to hasten the delivery of these units.
In case the contract for five additional S-400 units is signed during President Putin's visit, the Indian Air Force will have 10 squadrons of this world-class weapon in the next few years, giving it complete air dominance over its rivals in its vicinity and beyond, emphasised Group Captain (Retd) Uttam Kumar Devnath.

"India's border with Pakistan is over 3,300 km long, while with China, the frontier spans nearly 3,500 km and hence, we need at least four S-400 squadrons to be deployed along the Pakistan border in the West and at least five such units to be put in service along the China border in the North," Devnath told Sputnik India.

This will give India a complete, gap-free air defence coverage on both borders, which will get further boost with the induction of the Pantsir air defence system that India and Russia have agreed to co-produce in India, the military pundit noted.
Some media reports claim that discussions between India and Russia would also focus on setting up a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility for the S-400 in the world's largest democratic nation.

"Over the years, it will be beneficial for India, facilitating not only maintenance and repair, but also carrying out upgrades or making modifications to the system at the local level," Devnath summed up.
