Modi's Condemnation of Ukrainian Attack Against Putin's Residence Crucial: Experts
20:19 30.12.2025 (Updated: 20:44 30.12.2025) Expressing India's deep concern over the Ukrainian drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need to remain focused on peace efforts and avoid acts that could undermine them.
Indian PM Narendra Modi's condemnation of the Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian president's residence is crucial in bringing "clarity and statesmanship at a time when global tensions risk spiralling out of control," ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician Savio Rodrigues has told Sputnik India.
"Targeting the residence of a head of state is an escalation no responsible nation should endorse," said Rodrigues.
He said Modi had once again
positioned India as the "voice of reason" while calling for restraint and continuation of diplomatic efforts to achieve peace.
"His leadership reminds the world that peace cannot be achieved through intimidation — only through dialogue and decisive responsibility on the global stage," said Rodrigues.
He stressed New Delhi's consistent support for dialogue and diplomacy through the involvement of all stakeholders. Delhi has also backed the ongoing
US-mediated peace talks, including the recent Alaska Summit.
Retired Indian Army veteran Lieuteant Colonel JS Sodhi said the attack against Putin's Novgorod residence defied international rules governing the "laws of war."
"It is entirely illegal to target a leader’s residence, offices or family members," said Sodhi, a geopolitical analyst and author. "It’s a well-established international norm in warfare and has mostly been adhered to in past conflicts."
Sodhi recalled that Ukrainian drones had been spotted over the Kremlin in the past as well, but the attempted attacks weere foiled by Russian air defences.
"The onus of these attacks lies directly with Zelensky," Sodhi charged.
"I support Prime Minister’s condemnation of this attack, more so at a time when both the countries are engaged in hectic diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire and eventually resolve the Ukraine conflict," the Indian expert added.
Besides Prime Minister Modi, US President Donald Trump has also expressed his anger over the Ukrainian attack in a phone call with Putin on Monday.
The Ukrainian
drone attack has also been condemned by the
United Arab Emirates (UAE) and
Pakistan among others.
