The Russian Investigative Committee established evidence of deliberate extermination of civilians and prisoners of war by Nazi forces on occupied Soviet territory during World War II, Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said on Sunday.
On April 19, Russia observes for the first time the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People.
"As part of the investigation into genocide during the Great Patriotic War, the Investigative Committee of Russia has established facts of Nazi's targeted killings of civilians and prisoners of war in the occupied territory of the Soviet Union," Petrenko said.
Extensive evidence has been gathered through search operations, archival research, and expert analysis, confirming crimes committed by Nazi forces and their collaborators against Soviet citizens, she added.
"People were tortured and killed, robbed and deprived of shelter, entire settlements were burned down. The fascists destroyed schools and hospitals, looted museum valuables and works of art, attempting to eradicate any reminders of Russian culture," she said.
Nazi occupiers and their accomplices sought to enslave the civilian population, deporting people to concentration camps where prisoners were forced to work without food or rest, the spokesperson said.
"Materials collected by the Russian Investigative Committee formed the basis for 34 court rulings recognizing the crimes of Hitler’s forces as genocide of the Soviet people," she added.
The decision to choose April 19 as a memorial date is linked to the 1943 decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR "On measures of punishment for German-fascist villains guilty of killing and torturing Soviet civilians and captured Red Army soldiers, for spies, traitors from among Soviet citizens, and their accomplices." The document was among the first to record evidence of a systematic Nazi policy to kill civilians in the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War.
