The loading of nuclear fuel into the reactor at Unit 1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Bangladesh being built with Russia's participation has been completed, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom's engineering division said on Tuesday.
"Nuclear fuel loading has been completed at Unit 1 of the Rooppur NPP in Bangladesh," the statement said.
A total of 163 fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor core, which will be the final stage before the launch of the reactor, Rosatom said. The process began on April 28 and was carried out "in compliance with all safety standards," it added.
Once the fuel is loaded, the reactor will undergo a physical launch, after which its capacity will gradually increase. The next stage will be the power start-up, with the generated electricity starting to flow into the power grid of Bangladesh, which is scheduled for 2026.
Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant, equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 MW, is being constructed some 99 miles away from the capital Dhaka, under a general contract dated December 25, 2015.
