A country's success amid growing geopolitical tensions can be measured by five key indicators, according to Syed Munir Khasru, a professor at the Wharton School of Business in Bangladesh.
Khasru spoke during the session "A Future for Everyone, Prosperity for All: Managing Competition for Resources and Space" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), organised by the Valdai Discussion Club.
“I propose five simple criteria. Can your population afford food? Is there enough clean water? Is your development sustainable? Is your virtual space secure? And how prepared is your governance system to respond to shocks?” Khasru said during the session on Thursday.
He also stressed that geopolitical competition is intensifying both in the physical world and in cyberspace, while the rules governing interactions in these domains have yet to be established.
“How do we manage the constantly changing geopolitical situation on land, at sea, in space and in cyberspace? Cyberspace is becoming a new arena. The United States, China and Russia are competing in space, while India has launched its own rocket. Yet we still lack clear rules of engagement,” Khasru said.
He added that a similar situation exists in Antarctica, where geopolitical interests are growing but internationally accepted frameworks for future competition remain uncertain.
