Major G20 economies are privately seeking to convince the US of the harmful effects of sanctions against Russia on the entire world, Marat Berdyev, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Ambassador-at-Large for G20 and APEC Affairs, told Sputnik in an interview.
"As far as we know, a number of major economies are privately explaining to the Americans the harmful effects of the sanctions baton. They are convincing Washington that illegal restrictions only exacerbate risks and challenges in the global economy," Berdyev said.
He clarified that the G20's public discussions did not directly address the issue of further easing US sanctions against Russian oil.
In April, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright revealed that Washington had extended the sanctions waiver for seaborne oil shipments from Russia following the G20 meeting, where other participants had requested it. The US extended the waiver, which expired on May 16, for another 30 days, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Russia has repeatedly said that it would cope with the sanctions pressure the West began to exert on it several years ago and continues to escalate. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously said that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term Western strategy, and that the sanctions had dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy.
